My friend had to do a site visit of the Oban Inn, which is located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, this past weekend.  Now, do not mistake it for Niagara Falls, because it’s not anything like Niagara Falls, other than its near there.  Niagara-on-the-Lake is nestled on the south shore of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara River.

The town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is small, but very quaint.  Its home to the Shaw Festival and Ontario’s Wine Country – some of the best wines are grown here in Ontario (too bad I’m not a drinker, otherwise I would have sampled).  So, my friend asked me if I wanted to go with her as the inn also has a spa.  The room would be paid for and she would pay for my treatment because she already owed me money, so of course I said “yes!” because I’d be insane to say no to that.

Niagara-on-the-Lake has this small stretch, about 2 – 3 blocks, of downtown where the Shaw Festival Theatre is located and has all these shops and restaurants.  We ended up at the Shaw Cafe for lunch and the King Grill (?) for dinner.  Both were fabulous and we only paid for dinner.  The hotel included lunch in our package because my friend was there for the site visit.  We walked around the downtown part, but very quickly because we had to get back for the site visit.

It was so nice to indulge, and the spa at the hotel was great.  I got a manicure, because everything else at this spa was so expensive.  I just could not justify the cost to myself.  The manicurist was funny, she kept telling me stories of how her daughters are constantly in these fights with other girls at school.  The stories made the time pass by faster, although my friend was telling me when we got out how I have disrupted her massage cause she could hear me laughing.  I have a hearty, loud laugh that people have always told me they like, but I felt bad for having disrupted her relaxation moment, even if she was kidding, cause she obviously heard me.

It was good to get away from the city for the weekend.  Everything gets forgotten when you’re enjoying yourself.

On the weekend my parents, sister-in-law and I took my nephews to a Christmas party at the community centre nearby my place.  For a $1 entrance fee there were about 10 different stations/areas of activities for the kids.  They also handed out coffee, popcorn and candy for free.  And when you redeemed your ticket you got a can of pop and cookies.  My nephews decorated gingerbread cookies, made Christmas ornaments and got fake tattoos.  A great deal for only a buck.

We all ended up in the gym area of the rec centre.  There were 3 huge inflated playgrounds inside.  Then scattered around the parameter of the gym were various games.  There was a stage in the centre where these two volunteers danced up a storm for the kids, who followed along.  It was really cute, especially when my oldest nephew, almost 5 years old, tried to mack on some older girl who was dancing.  I almost peed in my pants laughing so hard cause it was so funny.  Seriously.

There was this little boy, probably about 2 years old standing nearby me as I was sitting on a bench watching the dancing.  I wasn’t paying much attention to him, but he was pretty cute.  Suddenly, I felt this little hand on my knee.  I look over and there he was, little guy decided to rest his hand on me, while leaning himself against me, oblivious to the fact that I’m a complete stranger.  His mom looked over at me and we smiled and chuckled.  He did this for about a good 5 minutes, with my dad taking a photo of it cause it was so cute.  When he finally realized he was leaning against a stranger, he smiled shyly at me and moved away.  Then, for a good 10 – 15 minutes he stood in front of me fixated.  He kept smiling shyly, staring at me, while waving chocolate animal crackers at me.  At one point his mom said to me “he really, really likes you” and we laughed.

Little guy (circled in red) in front of me giving me the (you can't tell, but he is, I swear!)

I know, I have this effect on younger men, they see me and want me…lol..yeah, right.  It was certainly a cute moment in the middle of all this craziness in the gym.  😉

I love all gadgets.  I’m not sure how this love started, but its there and I can’t get rid of it.  I love my iPod Nano.  I purchased my first one in Portland, Oregon.  Land of steel bridges and Powell’s bookstores.  Anyways, I upgraded my iPod a year later and gave my old one to my friend.

I listen to my iPod mainly to chill out, relax and sometimes, when I’m in a silly mood I’ll dance around my condo listening to my tunes.  And sometimes I’ll do that even when I’m not feeling silly -its a great stress reliever.  I’m really fussy about my music so I carefully load it with music that won’t annoy me over time.  Yes, I really am that fussy, and I have eclectic taste in music, at least that’s what my friends say.  So, I was quite content with my 2nd generation iPod.  I hated the look of the 3rd generation, so I was never tempted to upgrade.

So, about 2 weeks ago, I went to connect my pod with my computer to upload a song I had bought on iTunes.  Well, guess what?  My computer wouldn’t acknowledge that my iPod existed.  So, after many attempts of doing everything the Apple help thing said to do, except throw it against a wall in frustration, nothing.  I even tried to see if it was just my computer, it wasn’t.  And, to fix my iPod would be about the cost of a new one, so, guess what?  I bought me a new one in Buffalo and recycled my old one and left it there.  And, I got a 10% discount on my purchase for recycling it!

My purchase coincided perfectly with the launch of the new iPod Nano, so I didn’t have to buy the previous one which I didn’t like.  Timing is everything people.  I’m loving this new iPod, its sleek and has a few cool features to it.  And, hopefully this sucker lasts me longer than my old one – I plan to take it around the world with me.  Can you believe my first iPod is still working?  My friend hasn’t had one problem with it and I had to dispose of my newer one after only using it for a year.  Sad.

On a slightly related note, I have yet another business trip coming up so this new iPod will come in handy.  I’ll need it to entertain me while surrounded by big men and their big hats….inside joke.  😉

It’s time for a good old food blog about one of my favourites.

I could never be a vegetarian, it just goes against everything I…kidding.  Veggies are good, eating them full time?  Not my dream choice.  I just love meat too much.  It’s all about the protein.

I’m going out for some Korean BBQ with a friend on Friday night, my absolute favourite thing to do – so its been on my mind cause I’ve been craving a good Korean bbq for awhile.  The first time I tried it was about 15 years ago when the first one came to Toronto.  The best Korean BBQ I’ve ever had was in Vancouver, where they are actually owed by Korean’s rather than Chinese people, which is the case here in Toronto.  This particular Korean bbq place used coals from Korean to heat up the grill, so the flavour was different and cooking time was faster because it was so hot, much better than an electric/gas grill.

Anyways, before I slobber any more, I’m also going to a “regular” barbeque on Sunday.  Burgers, chicken, hot dogs, etc.  Since its my birthday month, all my friends have been asking me what I want to do.  My response?  BBQ.  I’ve been celebrating my birthday like this for a few years, with a simple barbeque.  I don’t need to party it up at a bar, something simple with friends is usually what I prefer.

I’ll be in bbq heaven this weekend.  And considering the weather is going to change soon – I better get in as much as I can before it gets cold.  I love grilled meat, but not so much that I’d freeze my ass off in the winter for it.  😉

I get to take off from work early today and start my long weekend early…yeah me!

I haven’t made any solid plans for the weekend.  My friend is in town from New York, so I’m looking forward to seeing her since her birthday just passed and I can celebrate it with her for the first time in 5 years.

My other friend wants to go hiking but we can’t get our shit together and figure out where in Ontario we should go hiking.  She wanted to go to Horseshoe Valley, which is up in Barrie and I was fine with that, but at the last minute my friend from New York emailed to say she was in town so I have to see her.  Horseshoe Valley had an opening for an overnight stay only for tonight…damn.  Then I looked at Blue Mountain, figured we could combine a hike with a spa day, nothing available there either.  I think we should just point to a spot on the map, get there and just go hiking. LOL. Ok, can you see how impetuous I am?

Of course, I always try to set aside a day to see my parents.  Possibly see my nephews.  They are getting really cute now.  Especially the older one.  He’s become very clingy lately, which is kinda cute. He never was one for snuggling, but now he is and the little guy, who was, isn’t as much now.  So, they are trading off.  I can’t imagine life without them.

Anyways, I’m just looking forward to the weekend. Work has been insane this week.  It’ll be nice to have a breather from it all. In less than two hours I can start enjoying it. 😉
